Fiji 3D Living Topography

An interactive 3D topographic map of the full Fiji island group, built for education, disaster planning, terrain briefing and cultural storytelling.

The problem and the approach

Terrain is decision-relevant in Fiji in a way it is not in most countries. Cyclone exposure, flood risk, road viability, village siting and evacuation routing are all topographic questions, and the people who need to reason about them rarely have a usable 3D view.

The application is built with a 2D web map as the always-working default and a 3D terrain view layered on top, so it degrades to something useful rather than to nothing on a poor connection or an old device.

Terrain accuracy is treated as a hard constraint. Synthetic or placeholder terrain is never presented as real Fiji, and the anti-meridian is handled explicitly so that island groups are never split or misplaced — a common and disqualifying failure in maps of Fiji.

Intended uses span education, tourism, disaster planning, terrain briefing, village resilience planning, infrastructure analysis and historical and cultural storytelling.

What has been produced

  • 2D base map with a 3D terrain layer
  • Digital elevation model sourcing plan, including bathymetry
  • Anti-meridian handling for the Fiji island group

What Fiji 3D Living Topography is not

Stated so that no reader has to infer it.

  • The application is in development and is not published.
  • It carries no official status and is not an authoritative source for navigation, survey, planning consent or emergency response.
